Guidelines for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
School of Economics and Management, CUMT
I. Purpose
These guidelines are formulated to standardize the innovative, rational, and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in teaching, research, and administrative activities at the School of Economics and Management (SEM), China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT).
The guidelines aim to safeguard academic integrity, data security, and technological ethics, in accordance with relevant regulations, including the Interim Measures for the Management of Generative Artificial Intelligence Services, the Measures for the Administration of Academic Norms in Higher Education Institutions, and the Personal Information Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China.
II. Scope
These guidelines apply to all faculty members, students, researchers, administrative staff, visiting scholars, collaborative researchers, and other stakeholders associated with SEM.
AI technologies covered by these guidelines include, but are not limited to: generative AI tools (e.g., Deepseek, Chatgpt, Doubao, Wenxin Yiyan), machine learning algorithms, intelligent writing and translation software, AI-based image and voice generation tools, and AI systems used for academic research and data analysis.
III. Core Principles
1. Ethics and Fairness
Ø Users must adhere to research ethics, professional conduct, and social norms, avoiding the generation of discriminatory, misleading, or inappropriate content.
Ø AI-generated outputs must be reviewed by humans to prevent algorithmic bias from leading to unfair decisions.
2. Transparency and Traceability
Ø When using AI in teaching, research, or administrative activities, users must disclose the purpose, tool name, version, and scope of use.
Ø Any AI-generated content incorporated into outputs such as research papers, reports, or assignments must be clearly acknowledged.
3. Academic Integrity
Ø It is prohibited to present AI-generated content as original work.
Ø Students must comply with the Student Academic Integrity Policy, and instructors must clearly define permissible and prohibited uses of AI in courses.
4. Data Privacy and Security
Ø Personal information, student grades, research data, financial information, contract documents, or other sensitive or privacy-related data must not be input into unauthorized AI platforms.
Ø Data handling must follow the principle of minimization and be securely encrypted.
5. Responsibility and Human-AI Collaboration
Ø AI serves as an auxiliary tool and must not replace human judgment.
Ø Users are ultimately responsible for the accuracy, legality, and ethical compliance of AI-generated outputs.
IV. Specific Guidelines
1. Teaching Activities
Instructors must clearly specify in course syllabi and teaching plans the permissible scope of AI use and guide students to understand the opportunities and risks of AI.
Instructors may use AI tools to assist in lesson preparation, material organization, or question generation, but the use must be disclosed in course documentation.
Students using AI for assignments, projects, or papers must indicate the tools used and their purpose; AI-generated content must not be submitted as original work.
Using AI to complete exams, tests, or other assessments that are meant to be independently completed is strictly prohibited.
Faculty are encouraged to incorporate AI ethics discussions and case studies into classroom teaching.
2. Research Activities
Researchers must disclose the use of AI tools in research proposals, papers, or project reports and specify the role of AI in analysis, modeling, or writing.
AI-generated data, models, or conclusions must undergo human verification and academic review.
The use of AI involving personal information, research confidentiality, or collaborative data requires approval from the relevant departments of SEM.
It is prohibited to use AI to fabricate data, falsify results, or manipulate research findings.
3. Administrative and Management Activities
Administrative staff may use AI tools to assist with daily tasks, such as document drafting or data summarization, only when sensitive or private information is not involved.
The deployment of AI systems (e.g., for intelligent scheduling, evaluation, or sentiment analysis) must be reviewed by SEM’s information management department for algorithmic fairness and data security.
Unauthorized surveillance, profiling, or opinion manipulation using AI is strictly prohibited.
V. Acceptable and Prohibited Uses
Acceptable Uses
Generation of teaching materials and learning aids (with human review);
Translation, language polishing, summarization, and text optimization;
Preliminary data analysis, chart generation, and visualization;
Academic support, such as literature review and idea exploration;
Administrative tasks involving non-sensitive content, such as document formatting or basic statistical summaries.
Prohibited Uses
Plagiarism, ghostwriting, or falsification of research data;
Inputting personal, confidential, or contract-protected information into public AI systems;
Using AI for illegal activities, infringement of intellectual property, or actions harming others;
Automated decision-making or evaluation without human oversight;
Producing discriminatory, false, misleading, or harmful content.
VI. Training and Education
SEM will organize AI ethics and safe-use training sessions periodically to enhance AI literacy among faculty and students.
Faculty are encouraged to integrate AI ethics case studies into classroom teaching.
Students are encouraged to participate in workshops or seminars on responsible AI use to develop the ability to use AI appropriately and identify potential risks.
VII. Supervision and Accountability
SEM is responsible for the interpretation and supervision of this policy.
Violations of these guidelines (e.g., academic misconduct, data breaches, AI misuse) will be addressed in accordance with relevant school and institutional disciplinary regulations.
Verified cases of improper AI use by faculty or students will be subject to corresponding disciplinary actions according to school policies.
VIII. Review and Update
This policy will be reviewed annually by SEM’s Party-Administration Joint Meeting and revised in accordance with AI technological developments, national regulations, and changes in university policies.
IX. Supplementary Provisions
1. SEM holds the final authority for interpretation of this policy.
2. This policy shall come into effect from the date of publication.
