To enhance the research and teaching capabilities of young faculty members and support their professional growth, the School of Economics and Management held three sessions of the "Young Faculty Growth Forum" on April 10 and April 24, 2024. The forums invited Professor Fan Xiucheng from Fudan University and Professors Niu Huawei and Su Haiyan from the School of Economics and Management at China University of Mining and Technology to provide guidance on teaching and research. The events were hosted by Associate Dean Jiang Hongyan and Discipline and Talent Office Director Chen Feiyu, with over 30 young faculty members actively participating.
Session 1: "Academic Forum"—Fan Xiucheng on "Sharing Experiences in Fund Applications"
On April 10, at 3:40 p.m., the first session of the "Young Faculty Growth Forum—Academic Forum" took place in Conference Room B503 of the school. Professor Fan Xiucheng from Fudan University was invited to share his insights in a talk titled Sharing Experiences in Fund Applications.
Drawing on his extensive experience as a fund reviewer and his practice in managing National Natural Science Foundation projects, Professor Fan provided valuable insights to the attendees. During the lecture, he also reviewed fund proposals submitted by faculty members from the school, offering personalized feedback and practical suggestions.
In the Q&A session, Professor Fan elaborated on key elements of proposal writing, addressed critical issues in the application process, and provided actionable advice. His guidance significantly helped faculty improve the quality of their fund proposals and enhanced their chances of success in securing funding.
Session 2: "Academic Forum"—Niu Huawei on "Reflections on Scientific Research"
The second session of the "Young Faculty Growth Forum—Academic Forum" was held on April 24, at 2:30 p.m., in Conference Room B503. Professor Niu Huawei delivered a lecture titled Reflections on Scientific Research, addressing the current challenges faced by young faculty members.
Professor Niu shared insights on improving personal research abilities, engaging in effective academic communication, and balancing research and teaching responsibilities. He also reflected on his own research journey and life lessons, encouraging young faculty to maintain their academic enthusiasm, resilience, and perseverance. He emphasized the importance of embracing challenges and striving for continuous self-improvement, which ultimately leads to achievements in academia.
During the session, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on selecting research topics and planning research paths.
Session 3: "Teaching Forum"—Su Haiyan on "How to Deliver an Outstanding Class"
The third session of the "Young Faculty Growth Forum—Teaching Forum" followed on April 24, at 3:30 p.m., also in Conference Room B503. Professor Su Haiyan presented a talk titled How to Deliver an Outstanding Class.
Starting with the social value of educators, Professor Su focused on three key areas: preparation before class, teaching design during class, and post-class reflections. Drawing from her rich teaching experience, she shared detailed, vivid examples to demonstrate the steps, techniques, and resources necessary for delivering high-quality lessons.
She also recounted her personal journey of participating in teaching competitions, gaining experience, and achieving significant teaching results. Her meticulous approach, engaging teaching examples, practical content, and insightful teaching methods won enthusiastic applause from the attendees.
In the subsequent discussion, Professor Su addressed questions on course design, teaching competitions, and accessing teaching resources, offering thoughtful and helpful responses.
Young faculty members are the future and hope of the school’s development. To align personal growth with the school’s progress, the School of Economics and Management has implemented various measures, including the "Young Faculty Growth Forum" series. Looking ahead, the school will continue to organize structured research and teaching activities, leverage high-quality resources from within and outside the university, and fully support and guide the growth and development of young faculty members.
